The studio has an interesting collection of all ages and genders, with the oldest into their 80’s. All are positive thinking individuals who come ready to learn, progress, and in many cases heal. They bring their challenges with optimism and continue to challenge my years of expertise.
Post Pregnancy Recovery is often forgotten about in our culture. Mother’s with young babies are busy and do not put enough time into strengthening and tightening their abdominal muscles before and after a child is born.
After carrying all the extra weight for almost 1/2 a year, the muscles in the lower back also suffer. After birth a mother is carrying a baby / young child, often in one arm or on one hip, for another couple of years! Imbalances and damage can be done and often goes unnoticed, or simply, it is ignored.
I see those mothers show up to my Pilates classes in their 40’s and 50’s and when we go back through their history their problems started after their 1 st or 2nd child was born.
In a perfect world, women would start Pilates before they get pregnant, do classes right up til 8 months, (assuming there are no other complications), and then resume Pilates at a suitable level 4 to 8 weeks after. Some can even start sooner, depending on how they feel.
If you are in a position where you have just had a baby within the last year, do yourself a huge favor, enroll in a Pilates class asap. The results you will see and feel will inspire you to keep your abdominal and back muscles strong.
