The studio has an interesting collection of all ages and genders, with the oldest into their 80’s. All are positive thinking individuals who come ready to learn, progress, and in many cases heal. They bring their challenges with optimism and continue to challenge my years of expertise.
Pilates is still new to many people, but with more and more doctors and physiotherapists recommending Pilates to people of all ages, it is becoming the preferred choice by many. Here are a few of the most common questions I get asked by people new to Pilates:
What exercise or exercises can I do to …………….? Some people want to lose weight on their tummy, others want a stronger core, some want smaller thighs…. The answer is not an easy cut and dry response. The Pilates approach to working out is different from other exercise programs. It is not what exercise you are doing, but how you are doing it. This is what makes Pilates different and why Pilates gets faster results. A good Pilates Instructor needs to spend time with each student to be sure their bodies are aligned correctly and that they are using the correct muscles for each exercise.
How long will it take for me to see results? Noticeable results are usually seen after the 4th or 5th class. If people do classes more than once per week the results after 4 weeks are remarkable, not only to themselves, but to others in their class or at home with friends and family.
Will Pilates cause my old injury to flare up? Many of us have old injuries or chronic problems by the time we are 40 or 50. To stop exercising weakens us and causes more aches and pains, especially as we age. A good Pilates instructor will go over your history and understand all the current physical problems you have before you can start classes. If there is any doubt that Pilates could irritate an old or current injury then the person needs to be referred back to their doctor before proceeding. The majority of time Pilates can help you strengthen your body without flaring up old injuries. This is why physiotherapists and doctors are recommending Pilates.
