The studio has an interesting collection of all ages and genders, with the oldest into their 80’s. All are positive thinking individuals who come ready to learn, progress, and in many cases heal. They bring their challenges with optimism and continue to challenge my years of expertise.
At Synergy Staying Fit Pilates in Ocean Park the class content is mixed with a variety of exercises using the Pilates mat, Pilates Reformer, Pilates Chair and the Spine Corrector. We also work with balls, exercise bands and the Magic Circle. Joseph Pilates created some wonderful equipment and each piece has it’s benefits for different exercises. The perfect class in my opinion would be to have a big studio full of all his equipment and just teach 1 person at a time with the freedom to use different equipment for different exercises depending on what gives the student the best advantage. The problem would be that the class would be too expensive for the majority of people.
The Pilates technique is complex and sometimes difficult to master, so the teacher needs to find ways to help a student understand. Connecting with complex core muscles can be challenging for a beginner. After many years of teaching Pilates I have found that people can get a little bored with a full hour of mat exercises or a full hour of Reformer exercises. Finding the best balance of mastering the Pilates technique quickly while keeping students alert and interested is a teacher’s #1 challenge. If students don’t feel and see results in a short period of time they lose interest. When they see their class mates improving they are motivated to continue and give each class their best effort.
The beauty of all the Pilates exercises is the technique remains the same and many exercises can be performed using different equipment or by simply doing them on a mat. For example: the Jackknife traditionally was taught on the mat, but starting it on the Spine Corrector gives the students added support in their lower back with less of a chance of injury.
At Synergy Pilates I have tired to find the best of both worlds by mixing up the exercises using different equipment. The students all say how quickly a class flies by. If I can get everyone to forget their TO – Do List until after the class, chances are we have run a successful class. And at the end of a block of 8 classes we can all see remarkable results.
