The human foot has 42 muscles, 26 bones, 33 joints, and at least 50 ligaments and tendons made of strong fibrous tissues to keep all the moving parts together … plus 250,000 sweat glands. The foot is an evolutionary marvel, capable of handling hundreds of tons of force — your weight in motion — every day.
Not enough attention is paid to strengthening feet. Your balance and endurance is affected when the muscles in your feet start to break down. Too often people are told to put orthotics in there shoes to help support their feet. Now the muscles you would normally use don’t have a job because the orthotics are there to do the work for you.
As we age, falling is a number 1 concern. Do people think of wearing orthotics in their slippers? Are their feet supported in the middle of the night when they get up sleepy and go to the bathroom?

The Pilates Reformer is an excellent machine to help strengthen your core. The Pilates machine we use at Synergy Pilates has 5 tension cords that will allow anyone from a beginner with injuries to an advanced level athlete strengthen and progress to a higher level.
Pilates for seniors:
The advantage for seniors or people with limited physical capabilities is that you can lay down as you exercise. Your spine is fully supported and there is no chance that you can fall.
For the advanced athletes, the standing and fully suspended exercises requires the entire body to be used. All muscles are engaged. An intense 30 minute workout on the Reformer is all most people can handle.
The Pilates Reformers with a rebounder will add cardio to a workout. It is like jumping on a trampoline laying down.
